Lesson Eight: People Matter More Than ProgrammingWhen I first became a coach, I spent a lot of time thinking about programming. Was this the right exercise? The right number of sets? The right percentage? The right progression? Those things matter. They always will. But over the last nine years, I've realized something. The workout has never been the most important part of coaching. People are. I've learned that no program—no matter how well it's written—can replace listening. No perfectly designed workout can replace encouragement. No exercise can replace believing in someone before they believe in themselves. Some of my favorite memories over the last nine years didn't happen because someone set a personal record. They happened because someone walked through the front door after months away. Because someone found the courage to ask for help. Because someone smiled for the first time in weeks. Because someone realized they were stronger than they thought—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. Those moments have reminded me that coaching isn't about creating better athletes. It's about helping people become healthier, more confident, and more capable versions of themselves. The exercises simply give us an opportunity to do that. As I've reflected on these nine years, I've realized something else. The people I've coached have probably taught me just as much as I've ever taught them. You've taught me patience. You've taught me empathy. You've taught me that every person carries a story you may never fully understand. And you've reminded me, over and over again, that kindness, encouragement, and simply showing up for someone can change far more than a workout ever could. For that, I'll always be grateful. Because while I hope you remember some of the workouts we shared... I hope you remember something even more important. I hope you remember how you felt when you walked through the door. Welcomed. Encouraged. Supported. Believed in. Because that's what I've always wanted this place to be. Not just a gym. But a place where people knew they mattered. Looking back, I don't think the legacy of these last nine years will be measured by the amount of weight we lifted. I think it'll be measured by the lives we had the privilege of lifting along the way. And if that's true... Then I'll consider these nine years a tremendous success. Yours in STRENGTH, Coach Rhuben |
I've spent more than 20 years coaching people in Athens, Georgia, and I've learned that strength is about a lot more than what happens inside a gym.As the owner of Team Williams Training, a husband, a father, and a coach who still has plenty to learn, this is where I share lessons about strength, health, coaching, family, and building a life with intention. Some lessons come from the gym. Others come from life. And plenty are lessons I'm still learning myself. Simple, NOT Easy. Intentional. Deliberate. And always getting stronger.
Hey Reader, Yesterday was a pretty special day. 🫶🏾 The journey of building Team Williams Training has been a roller coaster, to say the least. There were moments when I genuinely wasn't sure it was going to happen. Moments when things didn't go according to plan. Moments when I questioned whether I could actually pull this whole thing off. But thankfully, I didn't quit. I didn't give up. And yesterday was one of those days that reminded me why it was all worth it. Yesterday, Megan got to do...
Lesson Seven: Intentional & Deliberate If there's one phrase that's probably become synonymous with my coaching over the years, it's this: Intentional. Deliberate. You've heard me say it before a lift. During a workout. After a missed rep. And probably more times than you can count. The funny thing is... Those two words have come to mean just as much to me outside the gym as they do inside it. When I first started coaching, I thought my job was to help people work harder. Over the years, I...
Lesson Six: Consistency Beats Perfection If there's one lesson I've seen proven over and over again during the last nine years, it's this: Perfection is overrated. I've never met anyone who had a perfect training schedule. Life doesn't work that way. Vacations happen. Kids get sick. Work gets busy. Injuries happen. Motivation comes and goes. There will always be reasons to miss a workout. There will always be seasons when life feels overwhelming. The people who experienced the greatest...
